2015 – Week 17 Newsletter

October 15, 2015 by Earth Dance Farm

Sometimes I lay awake at night and think, where have I gone wrong, and then a voice inside of me speaks, “This will take more than one night.”

  • Charlie Brown

Week 17 crop list:

  • Dill – all
  • Pie pumpkin – all
  • Potatoes – all
  • Carrots – all
  • Beets – all
  • Napa cabbage – all
  • Romaine – all
  • Chard – half
  • Sweet potato – half, full
  • Kale – single, full
  • Pepper/eggplant – single, full
  • Acorn squash – single, full
  • Fennel – full

Farmer notes:

  • This is week 17, one more delivery of the summer share next week
  • Fall share begins on Thursday, October 29th with delivery 2 on Nov. 12 and delivery 3 on Nov. 24th. There is still time to sign up to extend the season!
  • Dill is wonderful with roasted or boiled potatoes – you can also spice up a lettuce/napa salad, or hang it to dry
  • Set your pumpkin out for decoration and make a pie when you get a chance
  • Dice your beets, carrots and potatoes and roast in olive oil and kosher salt
  • Irrigation is going constantly on fall share crops as we are in a very dry spell
  • It is incredibly late to still be delivering eggplant and peppers
  • Our first killing freeze comes this Friday night
  • Fall carrots are huge, sweet and, you know, orange
  • Wash all of your produce before you eat it

A big ‘thank you’ to all of you who made the trip to our farm to celebrate with us last Saturday!! We were blessed with perfect fall weather and wonderful guests as we enjoyed the day together. It is always fun for us to put a face to a name and to talk about produce, farming, health and life. Norm’s chili once again got solid reviews, we had the usual ‘way too much’ cornbread and pumpkin bars, and the carrots and apples made for perfect snacks. Several aspects of our gathering were especially fun this year: having 2 guys full time with the horses for 3 hours allowed folks to talk, groom and ride at their leisure, having all of the lawn games set up (plus the great weather) made it easy for members to have fun on the lawn, with straw bales around the campfire people seemed to hang out there for longer and later. Things are now ‘back to normal’ around here and we are left with lots of fond memories. All of you, as members, must remember that you are always encouraged and invited to visit us at any time during the season, to walk around the farm, and get a first hand experience of where your produce is coming from. Community Supported Agriculture is about staying local, supporting sustainable farming, and putting a face on your farmer. Enjoy your week 17 box of veg!
