Heavy rain and strong winds
The last 2 evenings I have been jarred from my slumber by cracks, rumbles and the thrashing of trees. We are expecting another storm with serious implications later this afternoon and evening. Thankfully there has yet to be any hail or distruction to the crops. Yesterday’s storm left many crops like corn and tomatoes lying down by the whipping wind, and some soils on hillside areas had washed and covered a small portion of plantings. Many of the riper raspberries were blown off or pounded to a pulp. I look out this morning and see many branches down and a 14 inch tree across my driveway that I need to clear before delivering your produce today. I suspect that I will not enjoy what I see in the fields from last night’s damage. My guess is that there will be newly seeded areas severely affected, some small plantings washed, and larger plantings blown over, but recoverable. It seems that the climate brings us shorter, heavier, and more devastating rains then I remember growing up. I will keep you posted in the next newsletter, but for now, I need to rev up my chainsaw so that I can deliver. I hope you enjoy today’s produce box! ~ Norm
