“Unless you know the road you’ve come from, you cannot know where you are going”
- African proverb
Week 9 crop list:
- Sweet corn – all
- Tomatoes – all
- Summer squash – all
- Zucchini – all
- Banana peppers – all
- Radishes – all
- Romaine lettuce – all
- Cucumbers – all
- Kale – full
Farmer notes:
- Make sure you have a designated person pick up your produce if you are out of town
- Over the last few days we have received a much needed 1½ inches of rain
- Some tomatoes may need to sit on your counter for a few days to fully ripen
- Sweet corn for the next few weeks now – enjoy
- Think about freezing or pickling some of the banana peppers
- Radishes are back with this second planting
- Cucumbers are showing little sign of letting up quite yet. I just planted more in the hoop house for the first fall share delivery
- Wash your produce before you eat it
Wow, with the thermometer at 49 degrees this a.m. and folks starting to head back to college, buy school supplies, going to sport’s practice, etc. it is sure beginning to feel like Fall. It always slays me that as the days become noticeably shorter, some leaves begin to fall and the evenings chill is when we reach the halfway point in our summer share delivery season. Yet our hot summer produce with the sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, sweet onions, green beans, summer squash and cucumbers are still in full swing. For the fall season the watermelon and cantaloupe are ripening on the vine, potatoes and sweet potatoes are ready to be dug, beets and carrots are getting weeded one last time, and the parsnips, rutabaga, fennel apples and winter squashes are moving slowly towards maturity. I would like you to consider signing up for our fall share if you have not already done so. It is 3 bi-weekly deliveries of a large bushel box. Dates of the deliveries are Th. October 29th, Th. November 12th and Tues. Nov. 24th. This will take you right through the Thanksgiving holiday. I usually offer one December box as well as a separate box. These boxes contain many root vegetables, storage produce, hardy greens and a few herbs and apples. I also deliver eggs throughout the winter months. Signup can be done on our website or contact me if you have any questions.
