Farmer Notes
Crop of the week – Brussels Sprouts
Alas we are at the final box of the fall share, and it is a great box with some weight to it. With lots of root vegetables making it rather heavy, the featured crop of the week, brussels sprouts, will be comfortably sitting atop those crops. Brussel sprouts are from the same group as cabbage and from the same family (Brassica Oleracea) as many other cruciferous vegetables featured throughout the summer and fall. Brussel Sprouts, in their current form, have been growing in Europe since the 13th century in what is now Belgium. The Netherlands and Mexico are the world’s biggest producers of brussels sprouts. They are high in iron, potassium, vitamins B1 and K, and have more fiber than broccoli.
My favorite way to have brussels sprouts is roasted with some basic spices, some red wine vinegar, and bacon bits. They pair well with meat and nuts, and when lathered in garlic and butter, can be a delectable treat. I truly hope you enjoy this week’s box, and thanks for sticking with us through the fall season.
