Farmer Notes

*This is our final Fall Share box, thank you so much for joining us for this season!!  Our Winter Share begins in 3 weeks on Th., January 5th – we would love to have you join us … or gift it to a friend:  https://earthdancefarm.net/csa-registration/
*We have a farmer’s choice this week which means you will receive either a bag of greens, a bunch of kale, or some radishes
*The kohlrabi, watermelon radishes and the turnips should probably be peeled before eating
*Honey is freshly spun from this year’s crop, it is raw and unpasteurized
*The popcorn is from last season so it should be nice and dry – we have a tutorial of how to shuck it on our facebook page here.  You can use an air popper, in a paper bag in the microwave, or on the stovetop with a bit of hot oil
*This is the last of our salad fixings until Spring Share 2023
*Please return all of our boxes as we can pick them up during the winter deliveries
*Have a wonderful Holiday season and stay healthy, warm, and joyful!!!

I have often wondered why my Dad did not keep bees on our farm growing up.  I know that he would have enjoyed them, and they seem like such a happy partner in the farming business.  We had 10 hives at Earth Dance Farm this year and ended up with nearly 400 pounds of honey.  We purchased them for $1200 in the Spring, and they do require some work every other week or so, but it is super rewarding to care for them.  We see/hear them daily throughout the summer and fall on our crops, trees, and at our koi pond.  On occasion we have a hive that is a bit aggressive, but for the most part if you respect them they will keep busy doing their work.  They pollinate our crops, give us such a sweet product, and are incredibly fascinating friends.  We hope that you enjoy the fruits of their hard work!

Crop of the week – Brussels Sprouts

Alas we are at the final box of the fall share, and it is a great box with some weight to it. With lots of root vegetables making it rather heavy, the featured crop of the week, brussels sprouts, will be comfortably sitting atop those crops. Brussel sprouts are from the same group as cabbage and from the same family (Brassica Oleracea) as many other cruciferous vegetables featured throughout the summer and fall. Brussel Sprouts, in their current form, have been growing in Europe since the 13th century in what is now Belgium. The Netherlands and Mexico are the world’s biggest producers of brussels sprouts. They are high in iron, potassium, vitamins B1 and K, and have more fiber than broccoli.

My favorite way to have brussels sprouts is roasted with some basic spices, some red wine vinegar, and bacon bits. They pair well with meat and nuts, and when lathered in garlic and butter, can be a delectable treat. I truly hope you enjoy this week’s box, and thanks for sticking with us through the fall season.
